About these roles

SRE remains one of the more title-stable disciplines — the core work hasn't fundamentally changed since Google's book defined the field, even as platform engineering carved off the developer-experience adjacent work. Strong SRE candidates in 2026 combine deep Kubernetes operational experience, observability fluency (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana/Tempo, Datadog, Honeycomb), at least one production incident-response horror story they can talk through, and the discipline to write SLOs and error budgets that actually drive engineering decisions. The role is often hybrid IC + on-call. Comp at senior SRE lands $200-300k US base, £105-160k London, with FAANG-tier comp going materially higher. Most processes include a real-incident-replay round (you walk the interviewer through a production outage from your past) plus a system-design and a coding round — the bar on coding is lower than for product engineers but non-trivial.
