The work centres on building internal developer platforms — self-service deployment, golden-path templates, infra-as-code abstractions that hide cloud complexity behind well-designed paved roads. Strong candidates pair deep cloud + Kubernetes fluency with product-management instincts (internal devs are your users, and they have alternatives), plus opinions about API design, documentation, and DX. Comp at senior platform engineer lands $215-315k US base, £115-170k London, very much in line with senior SRE and slightly above generalist backend at the same companies. Hiring is concentrated at companies between Series C and pre-IPO — too small and there's nothing to platform-ise, too large and the platform org is already built.
