About these roles

Engineering management hiring is structurally different from IC hiring in two ways: the role count is roughly 1/6 to 1/8 of IC headcount across most engineering orgs, and lateral moves between companies are much rarer because companies tend to promote internally for cultural-fit reasons. That means external EM openings are concentrated either at companies that have just raised growth-stage rounds and are scaling teams faster than internal promotion can keep up, or at companies recovering from manager attrition. Strong candidates show evidence of growing reports (specific promotions you've driven), running a meaningful program end-to-end, and at least 5-7 years as an IC before management. Comp at senior EM lands $260-380k US base + significant equity, £140-200k London. Process is heavy on behavioural rounds and a people-management case study; expect 6-8 conversations across 3-4 weeks.
