How to find fully-remote engineering jobs paying in USD

A practical guide for engineers outside the US who want US-band comp without applying to 500 listings to find one that's real.

There are roughly three kinds of role that get tagged "remote" on a job board today, and only one of them is what you actually want. Tell them apart before you spend an evening tailoring a CV for the wrong one.

The three flavours of "remote"

The first kind is fully-remote, US-paid: the company is incorporated in the US, pays in USD, and is genuinely open to hiring contractors or employees outside the US. These roles are real and they exist — but they're maybe 8-12% of postings that say "remote" on LinkedIn.

The second kind is fully-remote-within-a-country: you can work from anywhere in the US, the UK, or the EU, but the role isn't open to candidates outside that region. The job posting often doesn't say this explicitly — it just lists a country in the Work Location field that you'll only see if you click in.

The third kind is "remote in name, regional in salary": the company will hire you remotely, but it pays a local-market band indexed to wherever you live. Same job, two engineers, identical output — one paid in USD at $190k, the other paid in their local currency at the equivalent of $55k. This is the bait-and-switch path.

What to filter for

Three signals together tell you you're looking at the first flavour:

The salary band is in USD and discloses a number. If the listing says "competitive" or shows a band in a non-USD currency, assume it's regional-indexed. Engineering-only filter: salary_currency = USD + has_salary = true.
The work-location field says "Worldwide", "Anywhere", or "Open to global candidates" — not a specific country. Most ATS systems (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby) have a structured field for this; LinkedIn often hides it behind a click.
The hiring company is genuinely globally-distributed. Check the team page. If every engineer on the team is in California, the listing is probably US-only despite saying "remote".

Where the listings live

The shortlist of companies that consistently hire fully-remote with USD bands shifts quietly. Right now in 2026 the dense zones are: AI-platform companies (Anthropic, Hugging Face, Mistral, ElevenLabs), developer tooling (Vercel, Cloudflare's edge teams, Linear, Sentry), open-source foundations and adjacent commercial entities, and a tail of Series C-D SaaS companies that committed to remote during the 2021-2023 wave and didn't roll it back.

These companies post on their own ATS first and on LinkedIn maybe never — partly because the LinkedIn application volume from worldwide-remote listings is unmanageable, partly because they don't want recruiter spam. So filtering only on LinkedIn means you miss most of the genuinely-remote USD-paying market.

The conversation worth having on the first call

Once you've got an actual recruiter call, the two questions that save you weeks: "Is the salary band the same regardless of where I'm based?" and "Are you set up to hire as a contractor in my country, or do you need an employer-of-record?" Both have clean yes/no answers. If you don't get one, the role isn't actually fully-remote in the way you want — they just haven't decided yet, and you'd be the test case.
